It Takes A Village
Farming Hope works within a robust village of community partners, including our referral partners who recommend Apprentices to our culinary job training program, our partners in transitional family housing who refer families to our dinner and grocery programs, our meal delivery client partners, and our food justice advocacy partners.
We can’t do this work without their support, and we’re so excited to highlight one organization in particular this month!
We first met the folks at Booker T Washington Community Service Center, San Francisco’s oldest black-led and black serving organization, when we learned that $45 million was going to be cut for food security at the height of pandemic food insecurity in early 2022. Leadership at Booker T helped us gather over 30 organizations who were going to be affected by these cuts and together, we rallied for that funding to be restored and won. When the group first convened, it became clear that ensuring consistent and equitable access to food and nutrition services in San Francisco needed to go well beyond both a one-time advocacy effort and short-term thinking about hunger. A citywide, broad-based movement is required to realize a more just and sustainable food system that meets the needs of everyone and builds toward food sovereignty. Through a series of mini-retreats, including over 70 participants across 30 local partner organizations, the Food and Agriculture Action Coalition Towards Sovereignty (FAACTS) was born in 2022. Today, Farming Hope and Booker T are proud to lead on the FAACTS steering committee.
Since then, we have deepened our partnership with Booker T to feed their community every day, including the folks in Booker T’s senior program, for their Friday Community Meal, and lunch for their Freedom Youth School, for a total of over 800 meals per week! Not only are we feeding folks who need it, nutritious, flavorful, culturally relevant, made-from-scratch meals, we’re also providing our Apprentices with an incredible opportunity to apply and put into practice their culinary skills while giving back to their neighbors.
We’re thrilled to host July’s Guest Chef Dinner in partnership with the team at Booker T! Get your tickets today to support one of San Francisco’s most robust food justice partnerships.
